Test your knowledge: restoring anterior shoulder instability
Anatomical variations are widespread but are not always congenital. In some cases surgery can help nature to prevent further injury to the movement apparatus.
One of the surgical options for preventing anterior luxation, and hereby making an artificial bony anomaly, is known as a …….. procedure? (Hint: it's French)
Fill in the word I am looking for at the dotted line. Take a good look at the picture for another tip!
The word we were looking for was: Latarjet.
Traumatic glenohumeral dislocation or chronic glenohumeral dislocation/ subluxation can cause damage to or fracture the glenoid rim. The resulting bone loss leads to anterior instability that cannot be corrected with soft tissue/labral repair alone. Thus, a Latarjet/Coracoid process transfer is performed based in pre-operative diagnostic imaging and arthroscopic evaluation of the percentage of bone loss. The increase in bone area by securing the coracoid to the glenoid and resultant soft tissue sling from tendon attachments on the coracoid leads to a stabilized glenohumeral joint.
